How to Become a Full Stack Developer in Colorado

If you’re interested in a career in computers, software and coding, consider becoming a full stack developer. Unlike a traditional web and app developer, full stack professionals are more versatile. Rather than being trained in front- or back-end coding, they can do both.

Employers everywhere are increasingly interested in hiring full stack developers over more specific developers. With the coding languages to cover all ends of a website or app, these developers streamline the process of creating usable end products.

In Colorado and elsewhere, this is a new and growing career. Consider finding a program that trains full stack developers or cobbling together courses that will teach you everything you need to know to code in front-end and back-end languages.

Educational Requirements

Colorado, like other states, has no official requirements for full stack developers. To begin working in this career, you need to learn the skills and languages of coding and web development. Employers are more interested in seeing that you can do the work than in seeing a degree or certificate.

At a minimum, you must have learned one or more front-end languages and back-end languages. On the front end, developers use HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other languages to build the parts of a site or app that users see. On the back end, you need languages like PHP or Python to build the behind-the-scenes components.

In addition to learning a couple of these languages, look for courses that cover other aspects of web and app development: design, databases and user experience, for instance.

Full Stack Training in Colorado

As a new career, there are few degree programs specifically for full stack development. This is a growing industry, though, and you do have training and educational options in Colorado:

  • University of Denver. Rather than a full degree, the University of Denver offers a 12- or 24-week coding bootcamp. Complete the program full-time, or part-time while still working. You’ll learn languages used for both ends of development and work on real-world projects to showcase your skills to potential employers. Classes are conducted online.
  • Regis University. At the Denver campus of Regis, you can complete a certificate program for full stack development. The classes are in-person and accelerated. You will need 16 weeks to complete the program, which includes courses in several languages, app design and database technologies.
  • The Tech Academy Denver. This local bootcamp provides several programs in coding and web development. The Software Developer Bootcamp is most comprehensive and recommended for full stack development. It includes seven coding languages and supplementary classes. You can complete the course in 40 weeks on a part-time basis or in 22 weeks if you can go full-time.

Full Stack Developer Salaries and Career Growth

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has not yet recorded statistics for this new career. Similar careers the BLS reports on show steady, strong growth. For example, the BLS says that careers for web developers are growing at a rate of 13 percent, which is a lot faster than average job growth. In Colorado, that growth is even more impressive, at 26 percent.

Colorado web developers earn $77,600 per year and $37.31 per hour on average. Full stack developers can command even higher salaries because of the extended skill set they have. According to Indeed.com, Colorado full stack developers earn over $106,000 per year on average.
